Cats, Unicorns, and Other Games of Interest

The Difference Engine
Back in December I was fortunate enough to attend the Women in Film, Games and New Media Conference at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. Along with a keynote from journalist Leigh Alexander and an afternoon of talks on media, technology, and the gaming space, the event also featured games from the second round of the Difference Engine Initiative.

The DEI brought together women from different disciplinary backgrounds for a series of sessions that saw each produce their own games, and I’ve recently been informed that these projects are now available online, you can find them right here in fact.

On that note, I’d like to give two thumbs up to TypeCat, a game that uses cat memes to teach players how to spell like an Internet champion, and Unicorn Justice Fighter / Unicorn Robber Baron, a game I believe merges my love of both Unicorns and Tron – those two games have certainly succeeded in robbing me of time this week.

Definitely consider taking some time to check out all the projects, once again by clicking right here.

You can also watch video from the conference, including Leigh’s keynote, by means of this handy link right here.

Trailer Park – Sine Mora

Sine Mora
The latest video for Grasshopper Manufacture and Digital Reality’s co-developed shooter shows a considerable difference between playing the game on normal difficulty versus the “insane” setting the game offers. Just looking at all the candy colored bullets filling the screen on insane mode makes my thumbs itch something fierce…

The diesel-punk shooter is an Xbox LIVE Arcade exclusive this year, but is still waiting for a firm release date.

In the meantime, you can always catch the latest look below.

Hey Kids, It’s Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6
As many were expecting this week, Capcom has pulled the curtain back on Resident Evil 6, and surprisingly already slated the game for release on November 20th, 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with a PC date to come. According to the publisher, the single-player mode is also accompanied by co-operative action again, and fan favorite Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield will both be involved in the biohazard shenanigans.

It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest ever decision. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left.

You can catch your first look at Resident Evil 6 below, Capcom’s actually thrown out quite a bit to chew on here.

Your Recommended Dose of Kid Icarus

Kid Icarus Uprising
With Kid Icarus hitting the 3DS on March 23rd, Nintendo has served up fresh screenshots and video in addition to detailing the game’s intensity gambling simulator, or Fiend’s Cauldron. Along with the single-player story mode, the Fiend’s Cauldron allows players to adjust an intensity level, which ranges from 0.0 – 9.0 for each chapter. Increased intensity gives players the chance to earn more hearts and powerful weapons from enemy drops, with hearts serving as a currency for purchasing new weapons.

With the Fiend’s Cauldron, players can increase the standard intensity setting of 2.0 in increments of 0.1. In order to do so, players bet hearts into the Fiend’s Cauldron – if you’re defeated during said chapter, hearts will be lost and the intensity will lower.

Nintendo also mentioned nine different categories of weapons and the Exo Tank vehicle Pit will have use of during the game. Additionally, the publisher gave official words to the plastic stand that will accompany every copy of the game, which holds the 3DS at an angle to free up your hands and potentially lessen the control complaints that have accompanied every press showing of the title.

Perhaps shocking to left handed players, Nintendo is even acknowledging your existence by offering an alternative control scheme via the circle-pad add-on releasing in February.

But wait, there’s more!

Nintendo would also like to remind you that pre-ordering Kid Icarus: Uprising at select retailers can net you a download code for the 3D Classics: Kid Icarus, the re-mastering of the original NES title heading to the 3DS’ eShop.

And now, without further ado, catch the latest look at Uprising below.
