Your Recommended Dose of Syndicate

Space Channel 5 Part 2
EA is out hocking even more Syndicate this week, this time with ten minutes of campaign footage.

This gameplay demo clocks in with considerably less high-energy than the spectacular announcement trailer; I think that there’s a problem inherent in showing a video of a character wirelessly hacking his environment. It’s just not very engaging to see a guy look at a door until it opens, or look at a turret until it has been turned friendly—but the footage still manages to intrigue. In particular, I wonder about the applications of brain hacking in combat.

Other things I wonder about: life, the universe, and everything. Video after the break.

Regarding Cybertron, and the Fall of It.

Transformers Fall of Cybertron
We’ve known for a while that a sequel to 2010′s Transformers: War for Cybertron was a no-brainer, but now Gameinformer has bled out the first few drops of info on the follow-up, newly titled Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

There’s not much to say here, except that any art featuring Dinobot seems like an automatic win. Gameinformer says the sequel looks to set a “darker tone,” though one wonders how things could get much darker after the ending of War for Cybertron.

High Moon Studios will return to develop the sequel. Their efforts on War for Cybertron produced perhaps the best Transformers title available, while the developer was met with less success on the movie tie-in Dark of the Moon. One hopes that Fall of Cybertron will represent a return to form.

Trailer Park – Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

Assassins Creed Revelations
Ubisoft Trailer Day is always a good day; I never get tired of hearing about Assassins and their Creeds, especially given Ubisoft’s talent for arranging the subject matter in really fantastic trailers. They know how to leverage the omnipresent mystery and confusion of the franchise in such a way that I have no choice but to dole out my sixty dollars, even on their oppressive annual schedule.

I have to know all about the Assassins and the Creeds, you see.

You too can learn about this exciting field of study after the break.

Gears of DLC Turning

Gears of War 3 Horde Command DLC
Gears of War has only been on shelves for two weeks, and the Microsofts are already rolling out the first DLC package, which has now been dated for November 1.

The Horde Command pack will include maps, playable characters, achievements, weapon skins and fortifications for Horde mode. The maps will be playable in Horde, Beast mode, and in private Versus matches.

If you ever wanted to play as a slick all-black COG, the pack is going to run for 800 Microsoft Points. Also purchasable is the Gears Season Pass, which includes the first four DLC packs of the year at a discount.

For the full contents of the Horde Command DLC, explore after the break.

Review – Rochard

Review Rochard
Rochard is the story of burly asteroid miner John Goodman Rochard, his accidental discovery of an ancient alien artifact, and his quest to protect it from his nefarious corporate employer. It’s a story of lasers, gravity, physics, and boxes dropped on the heads of badguys.

Rochard begins the game with naught but his G-lifter and somewhat preposterous jumping height for a man of his, uh, build. The G-lifter will snatch items from anywhere on the screen (assuming an unblocked line of sight) and pull them to Rochard, whereupon they can be set down or launched as projectiles for both puzzle and combat applications.

Rochard later acquires the ability to create zones of low gravity and fire a mining laser at enemies, alongside a handful of other offensive and puzzle-based upgrades. In true Metroid-fashion, these upgrades enhance Rochard’s ability to explore and navigate the world, while skipping the backtracking that characterizes that series.

An Important Message About Colonial Marines

Aliens Colonial Marines
It only took three years, but Sega has finally lifted the curtain on Aliens: Colonial Marines with 11 minutes of gameplay footage.

The new trailer shows a narrated demo of part of the game’s second act, wherein the eponymous marines are assaulted by the equally eponymous aliens, and the result is more or less what you’d expect.

I’m reasonably impressed by the level of attention to detail here, especially with regards to duplicating the atmosphere of James Cameron’s Aliens—even the lighting recalls that sci-fi classic.

Needless to say, I think a co-operative videogame successor to Aliens is something we could all use in our lives. Colonial Marines is slated for release sometime in 2012, but in the interim, you can observe the gameplay demo after the break.

Portal 2 DLC Imminent

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Limited Edition
Valve announced today that a batch of Portal 2 interweb-distributed content will be distributed through the interwebs starting October 4—and through some manner of dark sorcery, Valve has convinced even the Microsofts to provide this content for the incredible price of nothing.

The free content will include Peer Review, a new test track for Atlas and P-Body that continues the co-op story, and also features a challenge mode accessible through both single player and co-op, complete with leaderboards.

Peer Review will be available next week through Steam, PSN, and XBLA.
