A Farewell to Cavia

Cavia
That’s the translated word buzzing around the Interwebz, following a Nier interview posted over at 4gamer. Cavia is being absorbed into parent company AQ Interactive, with Nier serving as the studio’s final release under the Cavia name.

While it may not be the most familiar name out there, Cavia was often responsible for an acquired-taste type of awesome that found room on my gaming shelf with titles like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Drakengard and Bullet Witch, as well as working on more recent name drops like Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles & The Darkside Chronicles, as well as the KORG DS releases.

What’s in a name and all that jazz? Plenty, and I’ll miss this one quite a bit.

I had to read this article to find out who they were… :\ I own 4 of those games and didn’t even know they made them… AQ Interactive rang a bell though… maybe because of Bullet Witch? I take it Nier did less than expected?

Yea Nier didn’t do so hot. Also AQ Interactive said they were getting out of publishing awhile back and were just going to be a developer, so I imagine the child studios like Cavia needed to maintain publishing deals with studios like Squeenix to justify their existence.

There wasn’t any fuller word on what absorption entails, but it’s generally safe to assume you break a thing into pieces to make it fit into your model, which I hate thinking means larger mainstream efforts over the smaller wonders a pack of smaller studios like the still existing Artoon and Feel Plus can offer.

Has anyone tried Nier? Worth a purchase at a discount or just a rental?

I sadly haven’t had the cash to pick it up Eden, and not for a lack of trying because I really want to know the answer to your question.

Let me know if you do because I really don’t know if it’s worth it…
