Nintendo 3DS – Revenge of the Virtual Boy?

Nintendo 3DS
The truly great part of this industry is that you can argue for weeks with fellow editors about whether a company will reveal a new product or not, only to have the news emerge when you least expect it, in the oddest way. Or so my theory goes while waking up to this short and to the point press note on Nintendo of Japan’s site apparently offering confirmation of a successor to the DS line – the Nintendo 3DS.

If you haven’t heard everywhere else by now, the 3 stands for 3D – the only real information so far being that the handheld will allow for 3D effects without the use of special glasses. This has a lot of people thinking back to a recently released game in Japan that uses the DSi camera to simulate movement and depth on screen.

Of course that’s only one way of thinking about 3D, so there’s plenty of room to speculate about what exactly Nintendo has in mind while waiting for more information at this year’s E3.

In the meantime I’m going to busy myself thinking about how a company like Q-Games could make interesting experiments with 3D handheld tech.

I wanted a Virtual Boy soooo bad as a kid. Looking back, that has to be one of Nintendo’s biggest flops. I expect the 3DS to be a runaway success though.

My biggest mistake (other then marriage) was trading away my Virtual Boy w/ hard shell carrying case and an almost complete collection of U.S. released games including Jack Bros. for my friends Sega Saturn w/ 4 games, shortly thereafter Sega started selling Saturn w/ 3 free games for $50 or so. :(

Maybe we can find an upside here, were any of the Saturn games Radiant Silvergun or PDZ?

Panzer Dragoon Zwei… yes. Not Saga however. Ah well. I do love my Saturn… (I did end up buying that second Saturn w/ 3 free games for $50 also… heh I figured for the 3 games alone it was almost worth it… and to have a backup – actually different version – Saturn was just a bonus)

Well, thanks for reminding me I have to find a Virtual Boy in good condition to add to my collection. It’s the only Nintendo console/handheld I don’t own. I even own Zelda Game and Watch!
