I really need to start trusting my instincts more, which yesterday told me that the odds of Geoff Keighley showing something worth watching Spike TV for was about as likely as me getting hit in the head hard enough to wake up writing reviews for IGN.
The spot for Vanquish is plenty slick mind you, but reminds me of the first peek at Bayonetta, which had plenty convinced the game was going to be bland and generic. What’s interesting this time around is the amount of comments, and even articles playing the Halo clone card. I’m not aware of any genre being singled out for the game yet, and pretty as the spot is, it tells us nothing about the mechanics that couldn’t change by the time we see some actual footage. I’ve been proven wrong before, but the possibility of Platinum Games making an FPS seems highly unlikely.
Anyone familiar with Platinum, Clover, and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, who is Vanquish’s daddy, might have been left thinking more of P.N.03 than anything. A similar anti-septic white suit to Vanessa’s is there along with the killbots, and I recall Mikami stating that P.N.03 was a game he wanted to put more into. Fine by me, I’ve always felt P.N.03 was a criminally under appreciated game that had plenty of room worth a revisit.
One additionally important note is that Vanquish represents the last title in the four game deal originally signed between Platinum Games and Sega.
